Let’s start with the obvious: I don’t know (yet) how I’m going to go about this “substacking” thing. How often will I post, or if I’ll do it always on the same day of the week (or month).
My personal planning skills are a work-in-progress, and I have an history of making my life harder than necessary when it comes to things that depend only on me.
The fact that I started this newsletter is, of itself, a testimony to my commitment to not overcomplicate, and a part of the “progress” of my WIP journey. I don’t want - or can’t - turn this WIP journey into a OWIP one (as in “Over-Work-In-Progress”), without much progress involved, as would turn out to be the case.
So I’ll save myself the trouble, and yourself the probably inexistent expectations, and say that I’ll do my best to do it as consistently as possible, and only when I think or feel I have something I want to share.
Another thing I don’t know, since we’re on the subject of “substacking”: I don’t know what format I’ll adopt for the posts/newsletters. Since this is as much a newsletter as it is a sort of blog, I guess I get kind of paralysed thinking about it, so… I’ll try not to think too much about it. Let’s see where this takes me and takes us, shall we? It can be different each time, and I won’t get too worked up about setting up a fixed structure for now (or ever).
One thing I do know is I want to have a way of communicating that is also a place of freedom and community. And here seems like a good place to try that out. I’d also like to publish some stuff without sending it as a newsletter, so that you don’t get tired of Unfinished Object (aka, me) before it has barely started, and so that each person can browse through, sort of “stake out the place”, to figure out if they want to stick around. I know Substack allows to do this, so I’ll be exploring that sooner or later.
(I also plan on publishing in Portuguese somehow, but… read all of the above.)
One other thing I don’t know is how and why you got here.
I can just guess and only speculate, but maybe you don’t know yet either, or at least you’re in for the ride for now, and waiting to discover if you want to stay connected. Let’s not make too much of a commitment, and let things flow for a while to see how it goes. For now, I’m just happy to be here, and happy that you are as well! I’d love for this to be a worthwhile company to you, and I’ll do my best to make it so. If there’s anything you’re particularly interested in around the topics I mentioned in my first-ever post, do let me know! I’m as curious as I am interested.
One thing I do know is I want to use this space to start publishing and sharing crochet patterns, so that you can get started on your crochet journey, or take a different turn with your hook and try something new. But! One thing I don’t know is what sort of pattern to share first.
Here I do know I’d love some pointers. You can take a look at my instagram, and tell me here in the comments or over there what type of mosaic crochet design you see yourself trying out first. Since you’re on it, share what’s been your experience with crochet or any other craft. Would love to hear (read) all about it!
[I also don’t know (yet) how I’ll get around to the subject of eventually selling some patterns, which is something I really want to do, besides other projects around crochet that I have jotted down in some notebook(s) somewhere. (Some of them will actually see the light of day sooner than later, but more on that… later. When the time comes, I’ll be sure to let you know. And that’s a promise! Or a menace.)]
This is it for now, my dear, brave reader! To finish off, I’ll just add some photos of objects I finished this past week, to hopefully give your eyes a break, and also share some things I know and want you to know too.
Keep on keeping on, and see ‘ya next time (whenever that is),
Ana
Finished Objects
Fresh off the hook, two experiments in mosaic crochet: one exercise in the round, and a bracelet I made to try out the metallic yarn by Algodão Selva, and test an idea for a submission call.
Two things I want you to know about:
This podcast is so worth your time if you’re into listening to crafters’ conversations that are engaging, inspiring and funny: The LoveCrafts Show, available everywhere so this link is a good place to get there.
If you’re not sure if picking up a craft is good for you, here is only one of the many articles about the benefits of handmaking: How craft is good for our health on The Conversation.
If reading this newsletter reminds you of someone (you like), and gets you thinking they might enjoy it, you know what you can do. ;)
Your table runner is stunning. I've tried a little bit of mosaic crochet and loved it. I ended up making a pillow design which I gifted to my son as he loved it :)
